As it gets closer to the end of the year, Iβm seeing more and more people post their ten before the end posts, detailing the books they want to finish before the end of 2024.
Now me personally, Iβm self-aware enough to know Iβm probably not going to finish ten books before the end of the year. But Iβm going to try!
Iβm also not going to finish my reading goalsβ¦ probably not even one of them. Which is something that stings a little - but also that Iβm going to be fine with since these things donβt matter that much.
What I did think would be nice, though, is if I picked ONE book from each of my goals (owned tbr, translated, australian, 24 in 24) to read before the end of the year so that I can make a little progress and finish off strong. itβs sort of like running, even if I have a bad run, I always try and finish the last minute to 30 seconds strong to feel good about knowing I put in a good effort.
So with that, here is my ten before the end!
Pixel Flesh, Ellen Atlanta
Of all the non-fiction on my TBR, this is the one I want to get to the most. I almost bought this book recently, but it was 35 dollars (!?!), so instead Iβve placed a purchase request at the library for it. Hoping it comes in before the end of the year so I can pick it up. The subject matter just sounds really interesting to me. If not, definitely one for early 2025!
Kairos, Jenny Erpenbeck | translated
Iβm also waiting for this book from the library, so whether or not it comes will determine if I actually get to it. But given it won the 2024 Booker Prize, it would be nice to read it before the end of the year.
Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, Samin Nosrat
Iβve been currently reading this for a big portion of the year, and admittedly Iβm not exactly in a rush to finish this since itβs not that sort of book but I do think it would be nice to finish even one more chapter (Iβve read salt and fat).
Never Lie, Freida McFadden | owned tbr
I bought this book on a whim for a flight and never got to it on the flight (I suffered through Mile High instead). But of all the books on my owned TBR, I think this is one I really should finish by the end of the year. Iβm suspecting itβll be pacy and fun, and I have been in the mood for mysteries lately so it fits nicely.
Just Kids, Patti Smith | owned tbr
This is another owned book I would really like to finish before the end of the year. Both because it was a 2024 purchase and I told myself I would all my new books, but also because my sister recently read this and so Iβd really like to read it while itβs fresh in her mind so we can talk about it.
Sword Catcher, Cassandra Clare | 24 in 24
Admittedly, I have done a lot better on my 24 in 24 goal than I thought I would, so there wasnβt actually too many to pick between. But Sword Catcher did jump out at me. I did start this book before I went on holiday and was intrigued with the premise and Iβd like to give it a proper shot. I also have a vague idea in mind it might be nice to read more series in 2025 and so this could sort of get me started on that path.
One Day Weβre All Going to Die, Elise Esther Hearst | australian
This is another owned book I would really like to finish before the end of the year. Both because it was a 2024 purchase and I told myself I would all my new books, but also because my sister recently read this and so Iβd really like to read it while itβs fresh in her mind so we can talk about it.
The Night Swim, Megan Goldin
This book only recently got added to my TBR, but itβs here because itβs in a favourite genre of mine (books that incorporate other media, in this case a podcast) and Iβve been really craving one recently so when I heard about this I knew I wanted to read it RIGHT AWAY.
Uncultured, Daniella Mestyanek Young | book club
This is the final book club pick for the year (theyβre going on hiatus in December) so I really want to finish my bookclub year out strong and read this. I actually know nothing about this book, it was a random pick for Non-fiction November from the group but I donβt think Iβve read any books with cults as a theme so it will be interesting to see what I think.
The Pairing, Casey McQuiston | 2024 release
Finally, to finish out the year it would be nice to read one fun, new release and I have The Pairing out from the library at the moment, so it feels like the pick. Casey McQuiston books are hit or miss for me, but I like the premise of this one a lot so I want to give it a chance.
Those are ten books Iβve like to read before the end of the year - as I said at the top, the chance of me actually reading all of these is low, but Iβm really gonna try!
Would love to hear the books on your end of year TBR!
Until next time!
